VNC provides a “virtual desktop” so it is more lightweight than a full blown desktop installation. There is a better way however, and that is to install VNC. As a result many people actually install Ubuntu Desktop instead of installing Ubuntu Server since the desktop version of Ubuntu has the GUI built in. Some people find this prospect rather too daunting and would rather use a graphical user interface (GUI) instead. Putty gives you a “Command Line” interface and so you’ll need to learn a few Linux commands in order to be able to administer your server this way. Once you’ve installed Ubuntu Server you will need a mechanism to be able to administer it. Open the configuration file in vim: vim ~/.Administer Ubuntu Server Focal Fossa 20.04LTS using VNC In your terminal type the following command to launch VNC server to create an initial configuration file: vncserver :1 Sudo apt install gnome-panel gnome-settings-daemon metacity nautilus gnome-terminalĪfter completion, your machine is ready with GUI support but needs some configuration to be done. So remember this since it will be needed later to connect to our VNC server.
